If your garage door has extension springs, this page is going to be informative for you. I quote prices for replacement of these springs here. If you are looking for price quotes for extension spring replacements, you’ve come to the right place. Many single wide garage doors use extension springs. They are not as popular now as they were decades ago, when all doors were wooden doors. Garage door extension springs do wear out and break, violently at times.
Question: How much does it cost to have the extension springs on my garage door replaced?
Answer: $225. This is an estimate to replace both extension springs on a 7 foot tall, single wide residential garage door that weighs between 70 and 130 pounds.
This covers basically all residential garage doors that use extension springs, except one piece doors and very heavy doors that should be on torsion and need a conversion. Heavy doors. Garage doors weighing more than 130 pounds, in my opinion, should be on torsion, not extension springs. I do extension to torsion conversions for those doors. One piece doors. At this time I don’t offer replacements of extension springs for one piece doors. One piece doors are exceedingly rare in this part of the country.
This estimate includes the trip charge, the springs (2), the labor to replace them and removal and disposal of the old springs. So, just to be clear, the Total Price for this project is $225. This project comes with a One Year parts and labor warranty.
8 foot tall doors: Most 8′ tall doors are on torsion originally, but rarely they can have extension springs. The price for replacing those is $275. If you have an 8′ tall door, please make sure to mention that when making an appointment so I can give accurate price quotes for extension spring replacements.

Torquemaster is a proprietary spring system found exclusively on Wayne Dalton residential garage doors. Like all springs, Torquemaster springs break after extensive usage and years of service. The old ones would last 15 to 20 years for some people. The new ones seem to have a shorter life expectancy, in my humble experience. If your garage door has a Torquemaster spring system, some of these pictures will look familiar to you. The purpose of this page is to give you a broken Torquemaster price quote.
Torquemaster is a metal tube, normally located just above the door, that has one or two springs inside. The springs are wound up and store force. That force is harnessed to, using steel cables, lift the weight of the door, making it feel almost weightless. When it breaks, it’s very important to have it replaced as soon as possible, and to not use the door at all in the meantime. Damage to the door and the opener could result by using it in this condition.
Occasionally, my solution to this problem is to replace the broken Wayne Dalton Torquemaster spring with a new Torquemaster. Those would be very unusual situations. Normally, I do a conversion from the current Torquemaster to a Torsion system. This is a common approach, used by most garage door repair companies.
In a conversion, we remove the Torquemaster tube, springs, drums and cables. Then install new torsion components consisting of a torsion tube, torsion spring or springs, right and left cable drums, right and left torsion bearing plates, right and left torsion cables and a spring anchor bracket and bushing. The spring has been carefully chosen to produce a balanced door action.
The cost of this project varies, depending on the size and weight of the door. Here are a few common examples.
If you have a single wide Wayne Dalton garage door, this section is for you. Most likely, you have a model 9100. I say that because the 9100 is by far Wayne Dalton’s best seller, the most popular panel style being the colonial raised panel style, as seen in these photos.
This is a typical example of a Wayne Dalton model 9100. This one is a single wide door, 9 foot wide and 7 foot tall. The Torquemaster spring is broken.
Outside view. A nice looking door, I think. This door is super popular in my area and I see them all the time.
I charge $400 to do a Torquemaster to Torsion conversion on a door like this.
This project comes with a three year parts and labor warranty.
Double doors are normally 16 or 18 feet wide, normally 7 feet tall, but sometimes 8 feet tall. Here are a few examples.

This is an example of the work we do all the time. This is a estimate for the replacement of one torsion spring, in this case on an eight by eight steel garage door. Torsion spring replacement on an 8×8 steel garage door is a common service we provide. It has no insulation and no windows. The original torsion spring has broken after about ten years of faithful service. Today, this door is getting resprung!
Both torsion cables are loose and or hanging. Sometimes, this is the first thing you notice. This is normal because the spring is broken. The cables are not broken and will be reused unless we notice some actual damage to them.
Disassemble the system and oil the bearings. Remove the old spring and install the new spring. Reassemble the spring system and tighten everything down. Set the drums and cables. Add the appropriate amount of tension to the spring. Doors like this always have just one spring.
The new spring installed and wound up. This time I was able to install a larger spring than the original. This door works great now and the new spring will last longer than the original did.
The total price for this repair was $300, which includes a three year parts and labor warranty. This repair would cost the same if the door was 8×7 or 9×7 or 9×8. The door could be uninsulated like this one or it might have basic insulation. Steelback doors not included but would not cost much more.
